Cl@ve

How do I register for Cl@ve in Spain?

Updated

Register for Cl@ve, the Spanish government’s sign-in system: register online, by video or in person, then start using Cl@ve Móvil or Cl@ve PIN.

Cl@ve is the Spanish government’s system for signing in to its websites. You register once, online (with an invitation letter, a digital certificate or, for Spanish DNI holders, video identification) or in person at a registration office, and then use it to sign in, for example with the Cl@ve Móvil app or a Cl@ve PIN code. The options are changing over time, so check the official Cl@ve website for the current ones.

What you need

Steps

  1. Open the official Cl@ve website

Go to clave.gob.es and open Registro, then ¿Cómo puedo registrarme? It lists every way to register.

  2. Choose how to register

Pick an option: online with an invitation letter (carta de invitación), online with video identification in the Cl@ve app, online with a digital certificate or DNIe, or in person at a registration office. Video identification is for now only open to Spanish citizens with a valid DNI, so with an NIE choose the letter, a certificate or an office.

  3. With the letter: ask for it, then use its code

Choose Registrarse en Cl@ve, enter your DNI or NIE (with an NIE you also enter its número de soporte) and press Continuar. Choose Sí, envíenme una carta de invitación a mi domicilio fiscal. When the letter arrives, go back to Registrarse en Cl@ve, tick Ya dispongo de una carta invitación, type the 16-character CSV code from the letter, add your mobile number and email and accept the conditions.

  4. Set up how you will sign in

Once you are registered, sign in with Cl@ve Móvil in the Cl@ve app, or with Cl@ve PIN: a code you choose plus a PIN sent to your phone in the app or by SMS. The official site explains each method.

  5. Try it on a government website

Sign in to a government online office with Cl@ve to check that it works. You sign in yourself, and you should never share your codes with anyone.

Questions

What is the difference between Cl@ve PIN and Cl@ve Móvil?

Both let you sign in with your phone once you are registered. Cl@ve PIN combines a code you choose with a short-lived PIN sent by the app or SMS; Cl@ve Móvil confirms your sign-in in the Cl@ve app.

Can I register with an NIE?

Yes, with the invitation letter, a digital certificate or at a registration office. You'll need the número de soporte printed on your NIE card. Video identification is currently only for Spanish citizens with a DNI.

Where does the invitation letter go?

To your domicilio fiscal, the address the Agencia Tributaria has for you. If that address is out of date, the letter won't reach you; register at an office instead, or update your tax address first.

Does registering for Cl@ve cost anything?

Registering through the official Cl@ve channels is free. Be careful with websites that charge for it.
